Remembrance Day – Sunday 11 November 2018

We have received the following details from St Andrew’s Histon:

On Sunday 11 November, we will be having a service at St Andrew’s Church, Histon at 9am, when we will be marking the completion of the new Roll of Honour recording those who fought in the First World War and would we would be very pleased if you can join us for this service.

The Remembrance Parade will begin at 10.30am from the Histon and Impington Royal British Legion Club. May I also take this opportunity to invite you to join the Act of Remembrance hosted by the Royal British Legion at the War Memorial, this year starting at 10.45am, after which we will move into the Baptist Church for the civic service.

 

New Staff Appointments for Histon & Impington Community (HICOM)

We have received the following news from HICOM:

Over the last three months HICOM has been recruiting for two part roles including one new position namely Histon & Impington Dementia Support worker.

HICOM is pleased to advise that Margaret Reed Roberts has been appointed, Margaret is an Impington resident and a social worker by profession. Margaret looks forward to starting on 5th November and adds “I am thrilled to be joining HICOM and to have the opportunity to support people living with memory loss and dementia, and their families, through outreach and new initiatives. I look forward to helping Histon and Impington to become a Dementia Friendly Community”.

The new role has been funded by donations from the Feast, Red Lion Beer Festival and Histon & Impington Town Charity.

Paul Seekings is to become the new Village Older Peoples worker and will replace Jean Newman who is retiring at the end of November. Paul explains “I have been working with HICOM as Transport Coordinator for the last two and a half years. I am very much looking forward to expanding my role to provide further support for the older people of the villages and helping them access useful services”.

Both Margaret and Paul will work with Jean in November and their full contact details will be provided in December.

The HICOM village wellbeing team will now consist of the existing Sefanit Inquai the Village Mental Mental Wellbeing worker together with Margaret and Paul.

September Full Council

Full Council was held on Monday 17 September, with just one member of the public present to listen to the debate.  For draft minutes look here.   Items of note:

Neighbourhood Plan

The Council agreed to support the Neighbourhood Plan Group in taking the plan forward and embarking on the “regulation 14 consultation” starting on the 1st October, for 6 weeks

Council Maintenance Vehicle

After several months without a vehicle due to electrical issues, the Council has purchased a second, petrol, version for use by its staff out and about in the villages.   Substantial savings can be made where the Parish Council is able to carry out its own maintenance and repair jobs and these 3 wheel vehicles are ideal for accessing all the Council’s various pockets of land and areas such as overgrown passageways.

The next scheduled meeting of Full Council will be held on Monday 15th October at the Recreation Community Room, New Road, Impington.  Refreshments are available from 7 p.m.

We are hoping to be joined by the Mental Wellbeing worker who will update us on her work in the villages

New Histon & Impington Village Older Peoples Worker sought

We have just received the following from Histon & Impington Community (HICOM):

This part time role first established in 2011 is to continue the work of the development of services, support and activities for older people in Histon and Impington and to improve the quality of their lives.

The present person role holder, Jean Newman is retiring in late Autumn and has been in post for seven years serving the community wonderfully well.

Over the recent years there has been:

  • an increasing prevalence of those living with dementia
  • a reduction in local government funding
  • an increasing awareness of social isolation and mental health issues
  • an increasing  change in the take-up of technology within the older generation

Histon & Impington Community aka HICOM has reviewed the current coordinator role in the light of changing circumstances and the need for additional support so the concept of a HICOM Older Peoples Team has been established. This will consist of:

  • Village Older Peoples Services Coordinator
  • Transport Coordinator
  • Village Mental Wellbeing worker (a HICOM role covering all ages)
  • Village Dementia Support worker (a new HICOM role)

The Coordinator will work closely with existing service providers in the community.

The specific objectives of the Village Older Peoples Services Coordinator role are to:

  • Support older people and carers with advice & information
  • Reduce loneliness & isolation
  • Improve take up of existing activities
  • Support existing & encourage new initiatives
  • Help older people to live as long as possible in their own home
  • Increase volunteer base within community

Histon & Impington Dementia Support Worker

With the increasing prevalence of those living with dementia and memory loss in our village community, it has been decided to establish a new part time role of a Village Dementia Support Worker. The worker will work specifically to improve the quality of the lives of those living with dementia and memory loss in Histon and Impington  as well as those of their carers and families

The key objectives of the Village Dementia Support worker role are to:

  • Support and improve the lives of people with memory loss and dementia, and those of their carers  and families.
  • Influence change and to promote a compassionate neighbourhood response and encourage socially inclusive communities, for people with memory loss and dementia, their carers and families across Histon and Impington.
  •  Support those affected  to maintain their social contact and help  increase these  within their local community as needed.

The worker will be employed by Histon & Impington Community also known as HICOM  which is  a village welfare charity formed in 1998 which has three main areas of activity;

  • The provision and operation of Histon and Impington Community’s minibus since 1998
  • Engagement and employment of the Village Older Persons Co-ordinator and assistant to support the needs of older village residents – this initiative was established in 2011
  • Increasing awareness and understanding  of mental health wellbeing in the community

As the person appointed to the role will have a chance to develop the future shape and direction of this support worker role it provides a wonderful opportunity to support the local community and influence local services.

Works Notification – Footpath Resurfacing – Update

The footpath resurfacing is now underway with Saffron Road (New School Road to Saffron Road) and Greenleas now complete. The schedule for the remaining works is below:

  • Kingsway  – programmed Wednesday 11th, Thursday 12th July
  • Pages Close – programmed Friday 13th July, Monday 16th July – Wednesday 18th July

Associated diversion routes can be seen here. Pages Close will be completed in sections allowing access for residents to be maintained at all times,  please be patient as there will likely be some delays whilst the area is made safe.

Unfortunately the Parish Council were not able to influence timings and although this work was originally scheduled for nearer the end of term, the contractors had to reschedule at late notice meaning not all residents could be advised of this impending work. The up-side is Histon and Impington are seeing great improvements to the footpath network.

In addition to the above, Histon & Impington Parish Council will also be installing a number of new cycle racks outside the Post Office and the local Co-Op.

 

Council Surgery and Police Crime Prevention Event

The Parish Council will be holding a Surgery for residents on Thursday 26th July 2018 from 4.30 p.m. in the Community Room at the Recreation Ground. We will be sharing the event with the Police who are putting on a Crime Prevention Event at the same time, through until 7.30 p.m. The Crime Prevention Event will focus on burglary and home security advice and will be run by Police experts in these fields.

Members of the Parish Council will be on hand to answer questions, take note of comments, and up-date you on the work of the Council.

Works Notification – Footpath Resurfacing

Cambridgeshire County Council will be closing a number of footpaths in Histon and Impington from 0730 – 1830 from the week commencing 09/07/18, for roughly two weeks. For the duration of the works a local diversion route will be in place for pedestrians and cyclists.

As part of the 17/18 Local Highways Initiative process, Cambridgeshire County Council in conjunction with Histon & Impington Parish Council are making improvements to the following footpaths:

  • Saffron Road
  • Greenleas
  • Kingsway
  • Pages Close

More details of the areas we will be working in and the associated diversion routes can be seen here. Please note the improvements will be place to place along all the footpaths in question, picking up the worst areas and any remaining wherever possible.

In addition to the above, Histon & Impington Parish Council will also be installing a number of new cycle racks outside the Post Office and the local Co-Op.
