Make a Will Month – March 2017

A will makes sure that the people and causes you care about most are looked after.

A will is the only way for you to make sure that your possessions, property and money goes to the people and causes you care about.

Make a Will Month is an opportunity for you to make sure that your wishes are carried out by making a will or updating an existing will.  If you do not have a will, the government will decide who inherits what.  Why leave such important decisions to someone who doesn’t know what really matters to you?

What is Make a Will Month?

It is where local solicitors and will writers have agreed to waive their usual will writing fee, in exchange for you making a donation to Arthur Rank Hospice.

The suggested donation is £95 for a basic single will, £155 for a pair of basic mirror wills and £50 to update a will.

How do I make an appointment?

You can make an appointment by contacting one of the solicitors or will writers listed below, asking to make or amend a will.

Please note that appointments are only available during March and are limited in number.  If you therefore decide not to attend your appointment, please let the solicitor or will writer know as soon as possible so someone else can have your appointment.

You must quote ‘ARH Wills Month’ when making your appointment.

Participating solicitors and will writers:

Cambridge Will Writing – Cambridge

Miller Sands – Histon

Thomson Corfield and Webb – Cambridge & Histon

Emergency road closure, Water Lane, Histon

We have received the following from Cambridge Water:

Advance notice of emergency road closure, Water Lane, Histon from 7pm on Wednesday, 14 December

Rush hour motorists travelling through Histon are being advised to expect delays from tomorrow morning through until Friday night.

Cambridge Water has to close the aptly named Water Lane, which is the main route through the village, to carry out emergency repairs to a 12 inch burst water main.

A spokesman said: “Although the leak is not visible, we expect it to be causing a lot of damage underground. It’s imperative we carry out the work as quickly as possible before it causes damage to the main road.

“This work has been organised in collaboration with the highways department at Cambridgeshire County Council and we are hoping for it to be completed Friday evening.”

HGVs travelling through the village are asked to be especially aware of the long diversions put in place which will take drivers via Wilburton and Stretham in the North, along the A10 down to the A14.

Other motorists are advised to seek out alternative local routes.

“We appreciate this work will cause disruption to motorists heading to and from Cambridge. We would like to apologise in advance and thank them for their patience.”

No properties will be without water as a result of the work.

Updates on the work will be posted on our website www.cambridge-water.co.uk

Christmas Lights

Hopefully everyone will have enjoyment from the new addition to our lights on the Green.  Barry Starling took this lovely picture last night.

The lights have been part funded by the Chop shop raffle held last Christmas together with the Parish Council Environment Committee budgets.

Thanks are due to our groundstaff  Trevor Smith and Alex Hale who ably assisted the contractor, Tates Treework, in arranging them in this magnificent tree next to the play area.

We are aware that there was an issue with the timer meaning they were still on this morning, but we are working to correct this today

Happy Christmas everyone!

Work to Minimise Flooding Risk

We all know and love it as the “Duck Pond” – but some may not know that it’s not a pond, should properly be called “The Brook” and that it fulfills a vital role in helping to drain the village and therefore keep us clear of flooding.

Water from the south (including beyond the A14), east and north flows into the Brook and then out westwards towards Oakington along Park Lane.  This drainage network – the “awarded watercourses” – are the responsibility of South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC). SCDC have a regular maintenance plan in place to ensure that water can freely drain through the network.

As part of that regular maintenance they’ll be removing some of the silt in order to establish a clear channel through the Brook that should be able to cope with the flows from winter rain.  The silt will be deposited at the side of the Brook where previously removed material has shrunk behind the retaining walls. In order to make a difference to flooding risk, these works will need to be carried out prior to January, are planned for Wednesday 30th November, and should take less than a day.

Because heavy machinery will have to be used some damage may occur to the grass – this will be repaired in due course by the Parish Council but it may be wise to plan to keep off the grass and mud where possible in the meantime!

There’s further, much more extensive, works being planned by the Parish Council during 2017 both to improve the area further environmentally, and also make some of this maintenance easier in the long term. We’d welcome input from anybody who could add expert skills to the group planning this work.

A day in the life of our Youth Worker…

Wow, what an exciting day of youth work!

We had 10 new members at Youth Club on Monday. The Community Room was a hive of activity – pool; table tennis; hama beads; bacon/cheese wheels being baked; connect 4; football on the muga; activity on the gym equipment – I love seeing young people having fun with friends!

Then, the Generation Game project kicked off at 6pm. 14 amazing young people came along. They’ve all got to know each other; started their portfolios; enjoyed hot chocolate and doughnuts – and started collating information about the older people they know.

Having checked my work phone and email since – I can list 10 young people who have signed up for the Level One Youth Work Course. If you’re interested, hurry up and book your place!

So, to summarise, I love my job! The young people around here are awesome – well done to the parents who have done their job well. It’s a pleasure to offer projects and opportunities to enhance their skills and knowledge!
