The 2017 Strawberry 50 Cycling Extravaganza

the best of the old with a sprinkling of the new.

Sunday 3rd Sept is this year’s date for the popular community cycling event, the Strawberry 50. Since it started two years ago, 1200 people have taken part and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. All are welcome; lycra or jean clad, five or eighty years old, tootlers and pootlers or strava bunnies – this event really has something to appeal to all.

The choice of distances remains the same; the 55 or 28 milers follow South West Cambridgeshire’s quietest and prettiest routes and the 14 follows the traffic free busway from H&I’s Recreation Ground to Swavesey Green and back.

New for this year:

  • An extra start and end point from Gamlingay’s Eco Hub.
  • The opportunity to cruise the route on an electric bike! Rutland Cycles are offering riders on the 28 miler the option of hiring one – you’ll need to reserve in advance, details on how to do so will be at strawberry50.co.uk/
  • Specially adapted bikes will be available for participants with disabilities via the You Can Bike Too project. To reserve your bike please call Sally Gibson on 07900 431298
  • As well as Carlo’s Ices, there’ll be some organised games on Swavesey Green for the Strawberry 14 riders

Same old favourites

There’ll be homemade cakes on route, free maintenance and bike checks, medals and certificates for the U11’s, a great, friendly atmosphere, free massages at the finish and great sign-posting and marshalling. We do our very best to be inclusive so keep the entry prices low – the cost for the whole family on the 14 miler is still only £10.

Bookings are now open for the 28 and 55, it’s turn up on the day for the 14.

Please spread the word. The Facebook page is The Strawberry 50 and the website address for detailed information and to reserve a place on the 28 and 55 is strawberry50.co.uk.

This event is organised by Friends of the Rec in partnership with Histon and Impington Bicycle Club with support from Tucker Gardner and Rutland Cycles.

This really is a great day, please do join in.

Community Gritting

Local Volunteers can help keep their community moving in freezing weather by taking part in the Community Gritting Scheme.

Under this scheme, the Parish Council agrees specific footpath routes with the County Council which are important to the local community.

Just like the gritters that clear the roads, the community gritting schedule is determined by the weather

Equipment and protective clothing is supplied by Cambridgeshire County Council.

If you would like to know more information or interested in becoming a Volunteer Community Gritter, please email admin@hisimp.net

Children’s Centre Consultation

The County Council is consulting on plans to restructure its network of children’s centres which deliver a range of children’s service. There are 40 such centres today including the one run at the Early Year’s Centre in Histon.

Under the plans the Histon centre will be ‘redesignated’. The Council says that it ‘would no longer run full Children’s Centre services from Histon Early Years Centre’ although it is likely to remain as an outreach delivery location.

Note that the Early Year’s Centre itself is not under threat. It is understood that some Children’s Centre Services will remain, some will be relocated south of the A14 and some may re-emerge in other facilities in the community.

It is important that as many people as possible respond to the consultation at:

www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/childrenscentreconsultation

There’s more information on-line if you follow the link. Alternatively click here for a copy of the paper which supports the consultation.

Book a place at our Finance Surgery

We have received the following from Bramley Court Care Home:

Thursday 29th June – meeting slots between 10am and 4pm

Around 140,000 people go into care every year, 43% of these are people faced with funding their own care and only 10% of these seek proper financial advice. The second phase of Care Act has been postponed to 2020, so those under the impression that some or all of their care may be paid by the government from 2016 may be faced with need to find an alternative solution.

At Bramley Court we are committed to supporting families through their care decisions. We would therefore like to invite you to one of our Finance Surgeries. This is a 30 minute initial consultation with a care fees specialist from Eldercare Solutions Ltd, who will provide information and advice on what is best for you.

Book your place today by calling 01223 236105 or emailing: events.bramleycourt@carebase.org.uk

Lets Talk!

We have seen this on the South Cambs District Council website.  The closing date for contributions is Friday 28 July 2017:

https://www.scambs.gov.uk/letstalk

SCDC are undertaking a listening and engagement exercise exploring the things that we love about our communities, what makes them great places to live in and looking at what we should preserve and enhance whilst the district is changing.  Over the next two month we will be holding informal conversations with residents in some of our villages, gathering views via an online Comments Form and also encouraging people to send in photos or videos that show what is important to them.  The information gathered will help councillors and officers to draw up a plan for the next five years.  Contact:  Richard May on Richard.may@scambs.gov.uk or 01954 713366

Your chance to influence our future thinking about what we want our district to look like in 5-10 years’ time.
