Retirement of Lynda Marsh, Histon & Impington Parish Council Responsible Financial Officer

On Wednesday 25th November, Histon & Impington Parish Council said “Goodbye” and  a huge “Thank You” to Lynda Marsh, our Responsible Financial Officer (RFO) as she retired after 24 years of service.

Lynda has held the RFO position during a time of great change, bringing her financial expertise from Barclays to the role, as we see many more responsibilities being delegated to Parish Councils.  Lynda has successfully negotiated all the changes and ensured our internal audit always met requirements.  As a result, your Parish Council was able to continue delivering key maintenance services and improvements to the village, year after year.

As well as our RFO, Lynda also clerked our Recreation Ground Committee, and worked with our Groundstaff and Parish Ranger teams to improve the sports facilities in the village, which are regarded by many of our village sports enthusiasts as best in class. Please join with us in sending Thanks and Best Wishes to Lynda as she leaves us to take on new and challenging roles in retirement.

As we say Goodbye to Lynda, we welcome Theresa King as our new RFO from 1st December.  Theresa has been working with us for the past fifteen months as Committee Clerk/information Office, and has supported  the Environment Committee in achieving the projects that have been delivered throughout that time.  As Councillors we look forward to working with Theresa to support some of the significant  projects the Council will be working on during 2021.

Rose Beds at the War Memorial (formerly the Peace Memorial)

Earlier in the year it was noticed that nearly all of the rose plants that had previously been planted in 2017 in the beds at the War Memorial (formerly known as the Peace Memorial) had died, leaving just three remaining. The Parish Council is putting together a plan to replant the beds with new roses, preparing the soil in advance to give the new plants the best chance to succeed, and seeking advice on the best spacing for them. Please bear with us while we get this project actioned, and we hope to have it completed by the spring.

Commemorative Oaks at the Copse

In 2018, our village Tree Warden, Pene Nudds, was inspired by the efforts of the Village Society in creating the poppies for the anniversary of World War One, alongside the commemorative flags that were produced by Impington Village College. As someone who is passionate about trees, she thought it would be appropriate to acknowledge the soldiers who had paid the ultimate price in the war with a more lasting tribute in the form of long living English Oak (Quercus robur) trees.

Her idea was presented to the Environment Committee at the Parish Council, who approved the project, and it was decided to locate the trees at The Copse on New Road, Impington. The trees were duly ordered and Acacia Tree Surgery chosen as the contractor to undertake the clearance work and planting of the trees.  Acacia were so keen to help with the commemorative project that they generously provided free of charge the stakes needed for the trees and suitable biodegradable fabric ties. A date was booked for the work to happen in March…..

And then the pandemic hit; the contractors all stopped work and we placed a hold on the delivery of the trees. As things started to return to normal, we replanned everything and settled for a delivery date of October 16th with the preparation work taking place in the preceding days. The trees duly arrived, as show in this picture, and were unloaded, creating a temporary forest!

The trees themselves are quite large, so the planting has happened over several days. They are now all in place, awaiting their chipping dressing to keep the area weed and ivy free in the short term.  Now that they are in place, we intend to install markers for the trees using IVC’s flag design (with permission) and a number to identify each one.  We also intend to commission an information board to explain the story and show the spiral trail of these special trees. We hope this will prove to be not only a reminder of historic event, but will also become a much loved and respected trail. In this COVID-19 year Histon & Impington Parish Council are pleased that the WW1 Oaks are in place ahead of 2020 Remembrance Day.
