E-Cops update – Crackdown Days

We have received the following update via e-cops:

In February we launched a web-site where you could register complaints about parking in your village. As promised we have taken the information that you gave us and have run our first two crackdown days.

During these days we ring-fenced our PCSOs and deployed them only to the places where you told us parking was a problem.  Before deploying our PCSOs I took a careful review of the information and it was clear to me that a lot of the parking being complained about wasn’t necessarily illegal.  This is due to some confusion about the difference between a Highway Code Rule and the rules established by the Road Traffic Act.  Without getting too technical, there are some rules in the highway code which are ‘should not’ and some that are ‘must not’.  Only the latter can be legally enforced.

However we recognise that this anti-social parking that breaches the highway code was of concern to a lot of you so rather than take no action, I drafted a letter highlighting the rules of the Highway Code that was placed under windscreen wipers of any car we found breaching one of the rules.  We also developed some new ways of utilising the technology at our disposal to target our PCSOs and cut out some of the admin and paperwork normally associated with an operation like this-  all at no extra expense to the public.

Over the course of the two days we issued a combined ticket/letter total of 200 which I hope you agree is some impressive work.  We are going to be repeating these crackdown days at unannounced intervals throughout the year, striking a balance between dealing with parking concerns and the other very important work that our PCSOs have to do.

So, please continue to use the web-site to report concerns-  we are essentially starting with a clean sheet- so if parking is a problem in your road you need to tell us about it.   You can find the link here: http://tinyurl.com/SouthCambs-Parking

I hope that you all have a safe weekend and that the weather stays nice for us!

Police Panel Meeting for South Cambs

Panel meetings for each South Cambs Sector are held every quarter.  Residents, Councillors and  Business Owners are encouraged to attend and share their crime and disorder concerns, thereby influencing local policing priorities for the next four months. Anyone can attend the meetings.

The next South Cambs Police panel:
Histon Sector – Panel Meeting – to be held on 22/2/2017 at 7.30 p.m. at  Orchard Park Community Centre, Central Ave, Cambridge CB4 2EZ
At the meeting you will find out what South Cambs Police have been doing and you will have the opportunity to ask questions or tell us about a problem in your area. From your input, we then decide at the meeting what problems the police will prioritise for the next quarter in your Sector

We have a representative who attends these meetings. If you are unable to attend and wish to put a general question to the panel, let us know by emailing clerk@hisimp.net in advance of the meeting day

Do You Know The Difference Between Driving At 20Mph And 30Mph?

We have received the following information from eCops which might of interest:

Stopping distances, consequences of hitting a child and fuel consumption are a few things covered in this week’s quiz to test your knowledge of the difference between driving at 20mph and 30mph.

The quiz, the second of its kind, has been created as part of a month-long THINK! speed campaign educating motorists of the consequences of speeding.

We are encouraging motorists to take part in the short quiz to test your knowledge of the difference between driving at 20mph and 30mph. The quiz can be found here: https://www.qzzr.com/c/quiz/248588/know-the-difference-cambridgeshire

If you kill someone while speeding, you will have to live with the long-term emotional consequences. Remember that speed limits are there for a reason.

Motorists are also encouraged to take the following advice:

  • Make sure you leave plenty of time for your journey, taking into account traffic
  • Watch out for changes in the speed limit
  • Drive to suit the conditions and the layout of the road
  • Don’t let peer pressure encourage you to break the law
  • Don’t assume it’s safe to break the speed limit because there is less traffic.
  • Don’t be tempted to put your foot down because the road ahead appears clear

Top Tips from The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA)

  • Check your speedometer regularly
  • Know the limits – look for signs
  • Assume lamp posts mean 30mph
  • Speed limits are a maximum
  • 20’s plenty when kids are about
  • Slow down when entering villages

Give yourself time
