Level 3 Heat Wave Warning

We have received the following information from the Met Office:

The Met Office has issued a level 3 hot weather warning across Cambridgeshire – lasting until Saturday (27 July) morning. Temperatures are predicted to remain over 30 degrees over the next few days, with warm and humid conditions expected to continue overnight.

Hot weather can be uncomfortable for most people. However for the old, very young and those with an ongoing health condition it can have very negative effect upon their health. There some key actions people can take to reduce the ill effects of very hot weather.

If you know or work with these and any other vulnerable people who may be at risk of becoming unwell in high temperatures please check on them and take action to lessen the effects of the heat.

Here are some practical tips on how to stay cool and beat the heat:

  • Shade or cover windows that are exposed to direct sunlight during the day, and open windows at night when the temperature has dropped
  • Drink plenty of water as sugary, alcoholic and caffeinated drinks, including tea and coffee, can make you more dehydrated
  • Make sure you take water with you if you are travelling or out and about
  • If you are working or going outdoors during the heatwave make sure you are protected with sun screen, and keep yourself hydrated by consuming plenty of water.
  • Walk in the shade, apply sunscreen and wear a hat, if you have to go out in the heat
  • Never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, especially infants, young children or animals
  • Try to keep out of the sun between 11am to 3pm
  • Avoid physical exertion in the hottest parts of the day
  • Wear light, loose fitting cotton clothes

Fit for the Future – NHS Workshops

We have received the following information from Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group:

I am writing to let you know that we will be holding a round of workshops during March 2016 to enable residents across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough to get involved in shaping local health services.

The Fit for the Future workshops are a continuation of the NHS Public Involvement Assembly sessions that were held last year. People don’t have to have taken part previously as the workshops are open to everyone.

We will be speaking about the newly formed Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Sustainability and Transformation Programme which is continuing the work of the 2014/15 System Transformation Programme.

The new programme, which involves all local health and social care organisations, is looking at how the significant challenges that face both the local health economy and the national NHS system as a whole can be addressed. It is also looking to help build a health and care system that is fit for the future.

This new programme has been developed following the publication of ‘Delivering the Forward View: NHS Shared Planning Guidance 2016/17 – 2020/21’, which sets out the steps to help local organisations deliver a sustainable, transformed health service and improve the quality of care, wellbeing, and NHS finances.

Five workshops are scheduled to take place from 6.30pm to 8.00pm as follows:

  • Monday 14 March – The Fleet, Fleet Way, Peterborough PE2 8DL
  • Wednesday 16 March – Central Library Cambridge, 7 Lion Yard, Grand Arcade, Cambridge CB2 3QD
  • Thursday 17 March – Wisbech Library, Ely Pl, Wisbech PE13 1EU
  • Monday 21 March – Ely College, Downham Road, Ely, Cambridgeshire CB6 2SH
  • Tuesday 22 March – Huntingdon Town Hall, Market Hill, Huntingdon PE29 3PJ

Everyone is welcome to attend. It is helpful if you could let us know if you are planning to attend as this will help us to plan the workshops for the number of people attending in each location. You can contact us on 01223 725304 or CAPCCG.engagement@nhs.net.

Representatives of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Sustainability and Transformation Programme would also be happy to come and speak about the programme at your meeting or community group and talk to you about how you can get involved. Please contact the Engagement team on the details above to arrange this.

For further information on the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Sustainability and Transformation Programme please visit http://www.cambridgeshireandpeterboroughccg.nhs.uk/STP/

We look forward to seeing you.

Mental Health Awareness Week in Histon & Impington

Mental Health Awareness Week in Histon and Impington is a local initiative seeking to raise awareness and understanding of the issues surrounding poor mental health in all ages from toddlers to older residents.

It grew out of a conversation between Neil Davies and James Blandford-Baker in early spring 2015 when we both became aware of tragic and challenging stories affecting young people in our community. As for so many in our villages, these stories affected us personally but also challenged us in our care and concern for others. With the reduction in statutory support and treatment for people of all ages with mental health conditions, as well as the stigma that is still associated with them, the Histon & Impington Mental Health Forum came together to see what could be done at a local level.

We are immensely grateful to the professionals (from organisations such as Blue Smile, the local GP surgery, all our village schools, youth workers and churches), as well as others who share these concerns, who have contributed to thinking through how we can increase our understanding of mental health for everyone in our community.

H & I Mental Health Awareness Week starts on Saturday 16th April and runs through to Saturday 23rd April and the activities through the week will include:

  • a fundraising concert on Saturday 16th April for village mental health projects
  • in school activities and assemblies
  • a parent drop-in to learn and talk about experiences
  • a Blue Smile workshop for parents
  • an exploration of the role of fitness in mental well-being
  • a ‘dementia friends’ information evening
  • the showing of the Disney film Inside Out, and Iris

The full week’s programme will be published in the 2nd week in March when the website www.himw.org.uk will be operational.

We are very conscious of how issues raised during the week will be addressed in the future.

We would be delighted if as many people as possible were able to find help or be pointed in the right direction through these activities. If you would like to help and/ or become involved please email neilsdavies12@gmail.com

Thank you to everyone who has supported this initiative so far!

Diabetes

The Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), the body that spends most of the NHS money in Cambridgeshire & Peterborough, has issued a useful booklet ‘could you have type 2 diabetes?’. Copies are available at the parish office and, presumably, at Firs House Surgery and Histon Library. It gives you a simple way to calculate your risk.

If you can’t pick up a booklet then got to http://riskscore.diabetes.org.uk/start. It’s an easy process and it even lets you mix imperial and metric measurements. That’s useful for me because I always weigh myself in kilo but remember my height in feet and inches!

Problem is you can’t change many of the risk factors, they go with your age, sex, ethnicity and family history. The only controllables seem to be weight and blood pressure so I guess it’s down to diet and exercise.
