New Assistant Role – For Histon & Impington Village Older Persons Coordinator

Histon & Impington Community Minibus (HICOM) have sent us the following advertisement:

Histon & Impington Community Minibus ( HICOM ) seek to appoint an assistant for the current Village Older Peoples Coordinator ( VOPC ) Jean Newman on a one year contract to help enhance the quality of life for older residents in the villages of Histon & Impington.

The aims of the Village Older Peoples Coordinator initiative in Histon & Impington are to assist in:

  • reducing loneliness and isolation of older people
  • improving take up of existing services for older residents
  • supporting current voluntary initiatives and encourage new initiatives
  • acting as a catalyst to help increase volunteer numbers and capacity within the villages.

The VOPC initiative started in 2011 and through Jean Newman’s work a number of activities including those at the Recreation Ground organised by Friends of Histon & Impington Recreation such as the Chair Based Exercises and Stroke Club have become viable and sustainable. Jean has worked with the HICOM minibus to develop a variety of shopping services to meet the needs of a particular group of residents.

Supporting these activities has become a time consuming part of Jean’s regular working hours and now is the time to provide more assistance to Jean to develop new areas of support for our elderly residents whilst she retains an overview of existing activities.

HICOM has previously discussed a paid part-time community minibus administrator role and again now is the time to progress a combined role to both support Jean and fulfil this part-time community minibus administrator.

The new part time assistant VOPC role (25 hours per month) will include:

  • support for VOPC where necessary with existing activities and help develop new activities
  • provide holiday cover for the VOPC
  • take over more routine VOPC roles such as minibus passenger support on shopping services and weekly Recreation Ground activities and on site venue support
  • administer HICOM shopping services / driver rotas
  • administration / publicity / marketing support for VOPC

Applicants are now invited to apply for the role, for details call 01223 232188 or visit www.hicom.org.uk

Changes to the Citi8 Service from January

Stagecoach have announced that from January Citi8 buses will terminate at the ‘John Lewis stop’ (Emmanuel Street) and will not go on to the Railway Station or Addenbrookes. Return journeys will start from the Drummer Street Bus Station.

This is of major concern to The Parish Council due to its effect on the elderly, the less mobile, and patients alongside commuters and pupils travelling into the numerous schools in Cambridge. The Parish Council alongside Cottenham Parish Council and one of our County Councillors went to lobby Stagecoach on their decision.

Buses are deregulated so the County Council has no powers to intervene. It is purely a commercial decision by Stagecoach who cited congestion between the City Centre and the Station as eroding their ability to run a reliable, punctual service.

To access the Railway Station or Addenbrookes you will either need to use Busway Service ‘A’, or change in the Centre. Many other services will take you there including the Citi7 which used to link up – but we were given the tip of using the 13 towards Haverhill for emptier buses 😉 (but please check it suits your journey). Unless you only have a ‘Single’ it will be covered by your ticket.

Firs House ‘outstanding’

The Care Quality Commission inspects and rates all aspects of our health service and that includes GP practices. Earlier this year it reported on the Firs House Surgery and rated it as being ‘outstanding’.

Join the Stop Suicide Pledge

Apparently twice as many people in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough commit suicide each year as die in road accidents.

STOP Suicide is a suicide prevention campaign that seeks to empower communities and individuals across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough to help stop suicides by being alert to the warning signs, asking directly about suicide and helping those who are feeling suicidal to stay safe.

This campaign is funded by NHS England and is being led by the charities Mind in Cambridgeshire, Peterborough & Fenland Mind and Lifecraft, supported by local NHS and Public Health teams.

It will involve general awareness raising about suicide, specialist training for non-mental health professionals working / volunteering within our communities and a public campaign to encourage sign up to the STOP Suicide Pledge for organisations and individuals.

Suicide is everybody’s business. The organisation ask communities to please work with them to make Cambridgeshire and Peterborough a suicide-safer community.

Opportunity for basic life support training

CPR Training Session in Community Room, Recreation Ground Thursday 23rd October

Life saving defibrillators ( CPADs ) are becoming visible in communities across the country and there is now one installed and operable at Histon & Impington Recreation Ground. The cost of the CPAD has been funded by The Friends of Histon & Impington Recreation Ground from profits from The Flaming June Half Marathon.

The provision of a CPAD will enable residents within the village to access the unit and the emergency services operators are aware of the community locations of units.

A defibrillator is used together with Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation ( CPR ) a first aid technique that can be used if someone is not breathing properly or if their heart has stopped.

Chest compressions and rescue breaths keep blood and oxygen circulating in the body until the defibrillator arrives.

An East of England Ambulance Service CPR and CPAD training session was held recently which proved to be very informative and useful to attendees. The session concentrated on basic life support for both adults and paediatrics and provided an introduction to use of the defibrillator. It was very interesting to see how simple the unit is to use and hear how much of a difference it would make in life threatening situations in the precious minutes before an ambulance arrives. There is a further session planned for 7pm on 23rd October, with 7 spaces still available, and if you are interested in attending please contact Neil Davies ( 01223 232514).

You may also have heard of Community First Responders who are volunteers who take it on turns to be ‘on call ‘ in the villages and carry basic first aid equipment and a portable defibrillator. The responders are activated by text by the Ambulance Service to attend 999 emergency calls within the community they live or work.

There are a couple of Community First Responders in the village including Angus Macaulay and if you are interested please do call Angus after 7pm on 01223 526616

Also attached (click here) is a poster detailing the list of public meetings that have been set up to provide residents with an opportunity to find out more information and ask questions.

As well as responding yourself, we would appreciate it if you could share this information as widely as possible to ensure as many residents as possible have the chance to let us know their views.

Many thanks in advance for helping with this. We look forward to hearing from you.
