Histon & Impington Mental Wellbeing Project

As the Histon & Impington Mental Wellbeing Project moves into its second year we are looking to update the initiative for 2018 and to reshape the focus of the project learning from the experiences of 2017 and to recruit a new Histon & Impington Mental Wellbeing Co- ordinator

There were many the positives in 2017 including:

  • Regular drop ins at St Andrews Centre Café and village schools and those who have attended have benefitted from the signposting advice provided
  • Small group sessions at the Infants and Junior Schools for children needing support
  • Successful launch of a toolkit for village youth groups
  • Signposting and support provided for individual village residents
  • Successful Village Mental Wellbeing week in October
  • Extensive networking to increase profile of mental wellbeing in the community

The three core project objectives continue to be

  • Increase mental wellbeing awareness and break down barriers
  • Assist with early intervention and prevention
  • Provide signposting and advocate for support services

The revised role aims to have broader community involvement with a team of volunteers to work with the co-ordinator and help increase awareness within the community. This will be supported by a Mental Health First Aid course in March and could include regular talks on the mental wellbeing such as mindfulness.

The village mental wellbeing worker will work within the schools helping children, young people and families with their understanding and skills in mental wellbeing. There will also be increased personal role support and a partnership with a counselling provider when required for those who need more specialist help.

The support of the project funders in helping make the project happen is much appreciated and the funders include Histon & Impington Parish Council, Histon & Impington Feast, Friends of the Rec, Poor’s Land Charity, SCDC, The Batterson-Chivers Foundation, Comic Relief through CCF and St Andrews Church Histon.

Full information on the new job role in in the detailed job description which will be available from the dedicated village mental wellbeing website www.himw.org.uk from Friday 19th January. Closing date for applications is Wednesday 7th February and we plan to hold interviews on 20th Feb

If you would like more information about the project please contact Chris Cox (chris.cox@hicom.org.uk)

Storm Eleanor – Advice from UK Power Network

We have received the following advice from UK Power Network:

You may have seen that bad weather is on the way and we are likely to see high winds in some areas this evening through to tomorrow morning.

Our electricity network is built to be resilient but extreme weather can damage overhead power lines resulting in some customers losing their electricity supply.  Where this happens we work to restore power as quickly and safely as possible. We have organised for additional staff in our contact centre to help customers whose electricity supply might be affected by the predicted weather, and we have called-up additional engineers to carry out repairs to overhead lines and poles as soon as the wind reduces to a speed at which it is safe to work.

You will be able to find regular updates on our website www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk and social media @UKPowerNetworks throughout this period.

Anyone experiencing a power cut should:

  • Call 105 to report power cuts and damage to the electricity network, or 0800 3163 105 (from a corded phone or mobile phone if you have no power)
  • Visit www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk for the latest updates
  • Visit www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/powercut and type in their postcode to view our live power cut map
  • Tweet @ukpowernetworks to report a power cuts or to receive updates

We advise people to stay clear of power lines and report damaged power lines immediately by calling 105 free from both a landline or a mobile phone. If they see electricity lines that are down or causing significant risk to the public they should call 999.

We provide extra help to customers on our Priority Service Register during a power cut.  Households with older or disabled people, those with children under five, or where someone uses medical or mobility equipment that requires electricity as well as other reasons can join the register.  You can find out more information about our Priority Service on our website: ukpowernetworks.co.uk/priority.

If you would like to share information about preparing for the storm or the priority service register on social media you might like to use the following:

Preparing for a power cut

Below is some additional advice:

  • Add 105 to the contacts on your mobile phone
  • Keep our Freephone 0800 3163 105 number handy
  • See www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/powercuts for useful videos and advice during a power cut.
  • Locate a torch, check it’s working and make sure you have spare batteries. Take care if using candles.
  • Charge up your mobile phone, and a rechargeable mobile ‘powerbank’ if you have one
  • Use a phone with a cord if you have one, cordless phones don’t work in a power cut
  • Keep fridges and freezers closed, with a blanket over as they will stay cold for many hours
  • Switch off all your electrical equipment, except one light which will let you know when the power comes back on
  • Remember the street lights may also be off so take care if you go out
  • Dress in warm clothes
  • Look out for vulnerable neighbours

A new working party has been meeting up and making plans for  facilitating a cross-business forum locally

As a separate project, members of the working party will progress ideas for streetscene improvements

Planter for the Village Centre

One of the ideas coming from the High Street & Beyond work is for planters in the High Street.  To kickstart these proposals, the Parish Council will be installing a planter on The Green for all to enjoy.  This is due to be installed tomorrow Friday 3rd November

The next scheduled meeting of Full Council will be held on Monday 20th November at the Recreation Community Room, New Road, Impington.  Refreshments are available from 7 p.m.  ALL ARE WELCOME!

Barclays Window

The High Street & Beyond working party have also made an agreement to display artwork from the various schools and children’s groups in the village on a monthly rotating basis in the 2 empty windows of Barclays.   Please feel free to give the staff positive feedback about this!

Histon & Impington Archaeology Group (HIAG) – Anglo-Saxon Swords of Cambridge

HIAG will be hosting a fantastic talk on Monday 13th November at Histon Baptist Church at 7.30pm.  It is by Dennis Sami from Oxford Archaeology East and is about The Anglo-Saxon Swords of Cambridge.

Burials with weapons of Late Roman and Early Medieval Britain have been traditionally approached as indicators of ethnicity and the distinction between “Roman” and “Germanic” people, as well as display of social status within a community or society. These views have been recently challenged offering a more nuanced interpretation. A reconsideration of the meaning, social value and symbolism of swords in the debate has been pivotal to expand our view of the post-Roman society in Britain. Thus, how can the swords documented in Cambridgeshire contribute to the discussion?

This will be a very informative and entertaining talk and there will be refreshments available afterwards and a chance to chat about all things archaeology.

News and Information from South Cambridgeshire District Council

Paper caddy recycling changes from 11 December

From 11 December, residents will no longer need to use paper caddies as part of their recycling routines. Instead, used paper should be placed directly into blue wheelie bins. It will still be recycled. Residents can keep their caddy following the change, and use it however they wish. Alternatively, the caddies can be recycled if taken to a household waste recycling centre. They should not be placed in wheelie bins. More information can be found by visiting www.scambs.gov.uk/recycling.

The decision to withdraw the paper caddy service was taken at South Cambridgeshire District Council’s Cabinet meeting in September. The decision will save taxpayers money and simplify the recycling process for residents.

Because of this upcoming change, the District Council will not be delivering any new paper caddies. If they are lost or stolen before 11 December, residents can begin putting paper in their blue bin.
