INCREASING BIODIVERSITY IN THE VILLAGES

The Parish Council has been working with Histon and Impington Community Orchard, Histon and Impington Trees Action Group and Histon and Impington Green Spaces on Natural England’s Nature Recovery Project.

Various mini projects are in the process of being undertaken to improve biodiversity at selected sites. This includes installing bird & bat boxes; creation of small structures to provide habitat for hedgehogs, lizards, insects etc. and the sowing of wildflowers.  The project also included the improvement of the hedgerows for wildlife at the Community Orchard with traditional hedgelaying.

Initial ground preparation works have been undertaken for wildflower seed planting at Manor Field, on a verge next to the B1049, Clay Close Lane Verge, and Doctor’s Close Pocket Park as part of the project. Full details will become available later in the year as the project continues. Volunteers will be needed to help with completion of the ground preparation and sowing the seed. The enviro.volunteers have already assisted with installation of the owl and small bird boxes and will continue to offer their support with the wildflowers.

The Parish Council are delighted to be taking part in the Cambridge Nature Network – Nature Recovery Project and are grateful for the funding provided by Natural England and the support from Cambridge Past, Present and Future

Green Bin Collections

We have received the following update from South Cambridgeshire District Council:

Green bin collections will resume from this Wednesday, 12 January, and we are asking residents to put their green bins out on their scheduled collection day. We’re also reminding people to check the existing (festive) schedule (as printed in South Cambs Magazine and available on the website), because collection days are not yet back into the normal repeat pattern following the bank holidays over Christmas and New Year.

The intention is to empty all green bins in line with the published schedule. However, because there are still several absences and vacancies, any green bins that are missed will not be emptied until the next scheduled collection in February. This is because there are not enough waste crews to return to empty these missed green bins. Any homes that are unfortunately missed will be prioritised for the subsequent collection.

The next green bin collection for Histon and Impington is scheduled on Saturday 22nd January with the blue bin followed by Friday 18th February.

Storm Arwen

Storm Arwen has been named and is forecast to bring a period of very strong winds and cold weather to the UK this weekend.

The strong winds may cause some tree damage in the villages, please be aware of possible dangers walking beside wooded areas when it is windy. There maybe a risk of falling dead wood and in extreme cases trees either fracturing or becoming uprooted.

Weekend Weather Warning

We have recieived the following advice from South Cambs District Council:

Bearing in mind the severe weather warning that is in place for heavy rain across much of southern England (including South Cambridgeshire) on Saturday and Sunday, we wanted to remind you of how the Council can help some residents whose properties are at imminent risk of flooding. Depending on the amount of rain, it is however worth bearing in mind that it may be the case that drains simply cannot get water away from an area fast enough.

As mentioned on our website, we have a supply of sandbags / Floodsax that can be delivered to domestic properties that are about to flood. As you’d expect, this is primarily aimed at our most vulnerable residents. Residents requesting these sandbags / Floodsax during normal office hours should call us on 03450 450 063 or email streets@scambs.gov.uk –  If it is outside of normal office hours and an emergency then please contact our out of hours number for Environmental Health Emergency on 01253 501 055. However, please bear in mind that we have a limited supply of sandbags / Floodsax and, depending on resources, it will likely take officers some time to deliver them. This is why it is so important to make preparations before a flood risk becomes imminent.

There are more useful tips for preparing for floods in the attached recent South Cambs Magazine articles below.

Neighbourhood Plan Result

After several years of hard work by Parish Councillors and residents of our villages, the Neighbourhood Plan reached its final stage on Thursday 6th May, the referendum stage, and we would like to say a huge thank you to all those who voted to adopt the plan. The Parish Council Planning Committee can now reference the plan in our responses to complex large developments, and it will help us to engage with developers.

The Parish Council intends to keep evolving the plan via future editions in order to keep pace with changes, but with this plan in force we have a solid baseline for the next update.

Our thanks go to all who helped to create the Plan in all its versions, and we thank you, as residents, for helping us to get this plan through.

Short term road closure tomorrow (19th March)

As part of the work by SCDC of clearing and desilting the watercourses in the villages, they are going to work on the culvert on Park Lane, at the bottom of Bell Hill. They have scheduled the work to be completed this Friday 19th March. They have applied to Highways to close the road for a 15 minute window in each hour to perform the works, this should take approximately 2 x 15 minute windows. We do not have exact times, but please be warned.
