One-Way Traffic Experimental Order – Bell Hill, Histon

We have received notification from Cambridgeshire County Council work is planned to take place between 0800 and 1700 on Friday 11th September, ( road marking is weather dependent).

Residents who usually park on Bell Hill, please can you park elsewhere during the day between 0800 and 1700 on the 11th September to enable the road markings to be completed as quickly and safely as possible.

The road markings at both junctions will be completed under traffic management, so there may be some disruption for drivers trying to get in/out of the junctions at either end, and through traffic. The signs will be installed at the same time.

Once completed Bell Hill will be one way from Church Street, and no entry from Park Lane.

Any objections to the making permanent of the Order should be sent by email to policyandregulation@cambridgeshire.gov.uk or by post to the address below by no later than the 10th February 2021.

  1. Why is this happening…I regularly walk, cycle and drive both up and down Bell Hill and have NEVER had a problem. Madness….

  2. Another example of wasting taxpayers money! The reasons stated for the Bell Hill scheme are in my opinion spurious and stretch credibility. To help with social distancing? – The nature of Bell Hill is that it is narrow and cars routinely park on one side etc. These features actually ASSIST social distancing! Because of these “natural restrictions” my family have routinely walked in single file – for the more than 30 years that we have lived nearby.
If this scheme is implemented, motorists will be faced with a much more dangerous route to access the north of the village. i.e. when coming into Histon from Park lane, motorists will have to negotiate the sharp left turn into Windmill Lane. Please ask for this scheme to be stopped as a matter of urgency. Many thanks

  3. Given we’re in the mood for helping safety on the roads during this difficult time, has it been proposed to reduce all village traffic to 20 mph? I can’t for the life of me understand why 30 is an acceptable speed to drive through our streets and around the sharp bends.

  4. We live on the tight corner of church street (next to the Chop Shop). In order for us to get in and out of our drive we rely on driving up Bell Hill to access Church Street travelling in the direction of the village centre – we are then able to get into our drive without stopping on a blind corner. Unfortunately it is now the case that we do need to stop on this blind corner due to the closure of Bell Hill, increasing the likelihood of a dangerous accident as cars and buses travel up Windmill Lane and onto Church Street. We are only able to reverse into our drive, as to drive in forward and then reverse onto the road at this location would be too dangerous. Should I feed back my concerns directly to the council email address, or is someone collating all comments? Thanks in advance. James

  5. There have been several reports that vehicles are still coming up Bell Hill, despite the signage. Could white lettering be painted on the road at the bottom of Bell Hill saying ‘NO ENTRY’. I have raised my concerns with Josh at the County Council, as accidents will no-doubt happen as vehicles swing into Bell Hill from Church Street now it is One Way.

  6. I have serious concerns about the safety of now needing to make the sharp left turn from Park Lane up to Windmill Lane. That junction often has cars parked on it so you are forced onto the otherside of road and then the turn is so sharp you have to “peep and creap”. Despite efforts to go slowly, it’s not an ideal turn to be met with a double decker bus coming towards you. I acknowledge that this is a 6 month trial but only hope that there is not a serious accident in the meantime.

  7. I think this is fantastic. The street is much less busy and I feel much safer cycling up and down it now without having to worry about traffic both ways! I hope it stays!
