Emergency road closure, Water Lane, Histon

We have received the following from Cambridge Water:

Advance notice of emergency road closure, Water Lane, Histon from 7pm on Wednesday, 14 December

Rush hour motorists travelling through Histon are being advised to expect delays from tomorrow morning through until Friday night.

Cambridge Water has to close the aptly named Water Lane, which is the main route through the village, to carry out emergency repairs to a 12 inch burst water main.

A spokesman said: “Although the leak is not visible, we expect it to be causing a lot of damage underground. It’s imperative we carry out the work as quickly as possible before it causes damage to the main road.

“This work has been organised in collaboration with the highways department at Cambridgeshire County Council and we are hoping for it to be completed Friday evening.”

HGVs travelling through the village are asked to be especially aware of the long diversions put in place which will take drivers via Wilburton and Stretham in the North, along the A10 down to the A14.

Other motorists are advised to seek out alternative local routes.

“We appreciate this work will cause disruption to motorists heading to and from Cambridge. We would like to apologise in advance and thank them for their patience.”

No properties will be without water as a result of the work.

Updates on the work will be posted on our website www.cambridge-water.co.uk

  1. I fear it is not surprising that the whole road doesn’t collapse from the weight of a lot of the huge vehicles that use this road all the time. H and I is in desperate need of a bypass. This is SUCH a dangerous road to be going right through the middle of a village with a large number of little children.

  2. I agree entirely. Time for a bypass. Traffic is currently being diverted down Station Road. The mixture of nursery and junior school children and cars driving on the footpaths (tracking mums and pushers!) to get through via this rat-run is dreadful. Spare a thought for us poor residents: air pollution between the High Street and the Baptist Church is appalling and all caused by the perpetual jam along our road. Even when Water Lane is operational, Station Road is a tough place for little kids made worse by the number of Enterprise Can Rental vehicles using the street as their overflow car park. And all this will get worse as the development at Northstowe really kicks off and its residents use Histon as a cut-through to Cambridge.
