Community public access defibrillator

Life saving community public access defibrillators ( CPADs ) are becoming visible in communities across the country and there is now one installed and operable at the Histon & Impington Recreation Ground.

The exact CPAD location is on the side of the Recreation Ground Centre building nearest the car park and the grass tennis courts, and the £2000 cost of the CPAD has been funded by the Friends of Histon & Impington Recreation Ground from the profits from The Flaming June Half Marathon.

The CPAD unit contains an automated external defibrillator or AED which is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient, and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to re-establish an effective rhythm.

The CPAD unit is vandal proof with a keypad and, when 999 is dialled, the ambulance service operator will provide a code to the caller to access the unit and the AED is available for immediate use. An untrained person can use the AED with guidance from the 999 operator or instructions contained within the unit.

The provision of a CPAD will enable residents within the village to access the unit and the emergency services operators are aware of the community locations of units. Consideration should perhaps be given to the provision of additional CPADs in the village.

A defibrillator is used together with Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation ( CPR ) and a couple of initial CPR training sessions have been organised in September and October at the Rec. If you are interested in attending please contact Neil Davies ( 01223 232514 ).

You may have heard of Community First Responders who are volunteers who take it on turns to be ‘ on call ‘ in the village and carry basic first aid equipment and a portable defibrillator. The responders are activated by text by the Ambulance Service to attend 999 emergency calls within the community they live or work.

There are a couple of Community First Responders in the village including Angus Macaulay and if you are interested please do call Angus after 7pm on 01223 526616

Histon Hornets Tournament 2014

Here’s a warning from the organisers to those in the IVC area:

‘Histon Hornets are holding their 5 a side tournament on the IVC this Sunday 13th July. It will be attended by over 4000 people so the traffic in this area may be greater than normal.’

We’re told that the event will finish well in time for people to get home to watch the World Cup Final in the evening so if you’ve got some free time why not take some time out to enjoy it?

A HOT START TO THE FLAMING JUNE HALF MARATHON

Over 650 runners took part in the first Flaming June Half Marathon which started and finished in Impington after following a 13.1 mile varied multi terrain course which visited four other villages Histon, Girton, Oakington and Westwick.

Local runner Sullivan Smith stormed home in an incredible time of 1 hour 14 minutes for the varied nature of the course terrain. Sullivan finished a full five minutes ahead of the second runner home. The first female to finish was Rachel Cave in a time of 1 hour 27 mins 21 secs.

Runners came from all over the country and region for the event which was organised by Friends of Histon & Impington Recreation Ground. The Friends also organise the popular Bonfire 10k held in November.

An incredible 88 runners from Histon & Impington ran the half marathon and only 200 runners had run the Bonfire Burn 10k before.

The organisers had provided dozens of free places to runners supporting local charities Blue Smile, Cambridgeshire MND and CLIC Sargent , and many other runners ran for their chosen charity.

Race Director Neil Davies enthuses ‘we had a fantastic event and fortunate that the 18 months detailed planning resulted in the run going smoothly. We have received great feedback from runners particularly for the marshals’.

The event raised £4500 and half of the profits from the event are going to be used to purchase a Community Public Access Defibrillator which will be installed on the wall of the Recreation Ground Centre so that it is accessible for the entire community.

You don’t have to run but those who do would appreciate your support!

Over 750 runners are expected to run the half marathon and some will be travelling long distances. Many are running for charity.

Parish Council decides to acquire Bypass Farm lease

The Parish Council decided to acquire a 30 year lease on Bypass Farm at its Feb 14 meeting. This 12 acre plot to the north of the village will help the Parish Council to address the shortage of open space across the two villages. In addition to the shortage as measured against South Cambs standards recent comments at the Neighbourhood Plan meeting earlier in the month and the results of the youth activities survey have both indicated the need for additional and different recreation space.

The Parish Council will now initiate a consultation to determine how best to develop Bypass Farm for the use of the community. Nothing has been decided yet and all options will be considered.

A copy of the presentation given at the Council meeting is given below.

Good turnout for Bypass Farm meeting

There were maybe 80-100 people at the Bypass Farm meeting last night. It was a good event with lots of good community involvement.

Neil Davies, supported by Brian Ing and David Jenkins, outlined ideas for the acquisition of Bypass Farm and for its development. It was made clear that nothing has been decided and no decisions would be taken until the community has been fully consulted.

A copy of Neil’s presentation is available. Click here to view it.

Last night was just the start of a process of enabling the community to decide what should be done with Bypass Farm. There will be many other opportunities to provide input including comments on this web-site.
