THE FLAMING JUNE HALF MARATHON; SUNDAY 7 JUNE; ALL SET FOR A WET JUNE HALF MARATHON!

After a successful first year the Flaming June Half Marathon returns on the first Sunday in June being 7th June.

In 2014 more than 650 runners enjoyed running through South Cambridgeshire rolling countryside in the multi terrain half marathon in glorious sunny weather.

The event organised by Friends of Histon & Impington Recreation follows a 13.1 mile route from the start in Impington following the Guided Busway support track to Histon before crossing country to Girton and then to Oakington.

Runners reach the halfway point at Reynolds Drove and the homeward stretch is along public footpaths back to Histon, with the finish line at Histon & Impington Recreation Ground.

Registration is now open at www.theflamingjunehalf.co.uk and the entry fee is £22.

Proceeds from the event will be used to improve community leisure facilities in Histon and Impington, and help develop sports and exercise activities for all ages.

The 2015 headline sponsors are Tucker Gardner, Holiday Inn at Impington and the Spirit Health Club.

Their generous support has helped the Friends provide 20 charity places to three charities:

  • Blue Smile;
  • Motor Neurone Disease Association; and
  • the Brainbow charity at Addenbrookes.

Charity runner registration forms are available at the event website: http://www.theflamingjunehalf.co.uk/

Recreation Ground perimeter fencing

Over the late Autumn period new perimeter fencing was erected around much of the Recreation Ground and this work was completed at the end of November.

There were a number of reasons for the work;

– the existing fencing along Fieldstead Road was in a poor state of repair and needed replacing

– many of the football pitches on the Rec are badly affected by rabbits resulting in health and safety concerns which without corrective action on match days would make pitches unplayable.

Perimeter fencing was recommended to prevent rabbits entering the ground

– Chivers Farms have introduced new fencing to regularise access and the rec perimeter fence complements this.

– improve general security of the Recreation Ground , last year a tractor was stolen and driven out of the Rec through the Guided Busway

Unfortunately on the first Saturday in December there was an incident involving a 12 year old boy from a Haverhill football team who we understand was climbing over the new 1.8m fence perimeter fence by the Guided Busway to go to the toilet.

The player did need two hospital operations for his injury and importantly we understand that he is recovering satisfactorily.

The Recreation Committee arranged the display of temporary signs requesting that fences are not climbed and have ensured that gates provided in the perimeter fence are open for ball retrieval.

The Committee are looking at the incident in detail to evaluate if further measures are required and a report will be presented to the Recreation Committee at their meeting on Monday 26th January

Histon FC: sponsor a tree

Histon FC is pleased to announce that agreement has been reached with South Cambridgeshire District Council and Histon and Impington Parish Council on arrangements to replace the trees that were felled in error alongside the guided bus way.

390 silver birch, cherry, and lime saplings will be planted in the affected area shortly. The price of the saplings is £600 and costs will also be incurred in ground preparation and ongoing weed maintenance. Histon fans and members of the local community are invited to help fund these arrangements by sponsoring a tree for Histon FC.

Sponsorship of each tree will cost £2.00. There is no limit on the number of trees you can sponsor, subject to sums donated not exceeding the costs involved. The names of all sponsors will be listed on a scroll which will initially be displayed in the Club bar.

It is intended to plant the saplings this Thursday, 4 December, from 9.00am and volunteers to assist in planting will be very welcome.

Anyone who would like to sponsor a tree for Histon FC or would like to volunteer to help plant the trees on Thursday morning is asked to contact Howard Wilkins (Club Secretary) 01223 237373 or email secretary@histonfc.co.uk.

New tennis courts proposed at this month’s PC meeting

It was a pretty short agenda at this month’s Parish Council meeting and this was fortunate because it gave the council plenty of time to consider a proposal from the Rec Committee along with the Tennis Club for new tennis courts.

A proposal for the new courts is attached and both the Parish Council and the Tennis Club are keen to get comments from people in the community. Click here for a copy of the proposal.

There’s more information about Histon Tennis Club at www.histontennisclub.co.uk.

Great Idea for Fund Raiser

Yesterday GE Energy Management on Vision Park hired pitches on the Recreation Ground for a charity 5-a-side football tournament as part of a Company Family Fun Day.  They picked a beautiful day.  Great fun was had by all, with a barbecue lunch, and they went away very happy.

Having raised over £500 for Impington based charity Camtrust, the organiser reports  ‘We had an excellent time in excellent weather with excellent facilities’

Camtrust offer educational opportunities for adults with learning difficulties.

OUTDOOR FILM SHOW – FRIDAY 5th SEPTEMBER

In a quite possibly a first for the village there will be an outdoor film presentation at the Histon & impington Recreation Ground on a 8 x 5 metre large screen

The film being shown is ‘ Warhorse ‘ the Stephen Spielberg epic which is set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War. “War Horse” begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully arted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets-British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter-before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man’s Land.

The vent is being run by the Friends of the Rec. There will be more info at www.friendsoftherec.co.uk. Alternatively click here for a pdf of the poster.

The film show will start at 7.30pm, admission on the evening £5 adult, Under 18s £2 or family £10.

Picnics permitted, food and bar are being provided on the evening.

Warhorse is a 12A rated film.
