Xmas lights: what do you think?

In response to some criticism in 2012 and with the support of local businesses (thank you!) the Parish Council invested in more lights for the Green and bought a bigger tree. What do you think?

The team that put together this year’s show will be reviewing it and suggesting what may be done for Xmas 2014. The final decisions will of course be done at the end of the year but it’s nonetheless worth developing ideas whilst the Xmas lights 2013 are still in place.

Please contribute to this process. Should we have more lights (with a couple of extra lighting columns along the edge of the Green it will be possible to run a continuous string from Daisy Chain to the Phoenix) ? Should we have a bigger tree? Or should we perhaps not bother? Should we maybe run winter events on the Green in the run up to Xmas?

  1. Well done to those responsible for the new lights, they really made a difference. Some lights either side of the road from the Phoenix to Daisy Chain would add a wow factor though. Any ‘lighting columns’ should be temporary/removable so as not to clutter up the Green area.

    Many thanks.

  2. We thought they were really pretty this year, thanks to everyone involved. We wondered if perhaps it might be possible to add some along the high street, to add some christmas spirit there too?

  3. looked much better this year, tree size was about right, maybe a little bigger but if it’s too big then it’s out of proportion. a few more light would look lovely, and yes family events on the green would be nice to the lead up to christmas. I missed the carols on this green this year as i was ill,but found out that they may not of been on there anyway, what a shame. well done to the people involved in the decorations, your hard work was very much appreciated.
    regards.

  4. They were a great improvement on last year and made the centre of the village much more festive this year.

Thank you to the team that put them up.

  5. As above- really enjoyed the new lights added to the previous ones. Only request- might we have some more? Christmas tree looked great too. Many thanks everyone involved for making the Green so festive for us all.

  6. The Green looked lovely!
Like others suggest, there could have been slightly more so that all sides have lights but that may depend on feelings of houses in close proximity & cost.
The tree looked great. It could be fractionally bigger, but not much.
Like others, I would favour a return of carols on the Green and potentially other events too.

  7. As a purely personal view, I thought that the “spangly necklace” looked vulgar and excessive. The normal simple string of multi-coloured lights would have looked fine on their own and the tree was about right. As I commented last year, I do not see this as a competition to out-do any other village; I feel that we do need to keep the decorations at a level proportionate to a village rather than appear to be emulating the Robson Green character in the television play. However, looking at the other comments I am not sure that my remarks will be well received as they represent a minority opinion.

  8. We only moved to Histon at the beginning of last year so we didn’t see last year’s lights but we enjoyed this year’s lights very much. I think some events leading up to Christmas would be really good. How about a christmas market weekend? A wintery equivalent to the Feast week?

  9. I thought the lights and tree were great this year. A big thank you to all who made them happen. I did miss the carols/stall being on The Green. Maybe next year we could have it back there but with a contingency plan to have it at the Juniors if the weather is to be very wet or windy?

  10. I thought the lights were great and my kids loved them. I agree that the gold lights looked a bit lost but the tree was perfect. Well done to all those who made it possible

  11. Personally I thought the lights were fine last year (2012) If there are too many they look tacky and garish so I would not like to see anymore than there was this time.
The lights always look lovely over the pond, and I see no need to add to them.
The tree was nice but I agree with the other person who said the sparkly thing between the trees was excessive.

That said I appreciate the efforts of everyone involved so thanks for that.

  12. Please do keep the Christmas tree, it looked lovely and just right size. I don’t think we need loads of lights, but it would be lovely if they could somehow link up together. I prefer the simple coloured lights.

  13. First of all, like everyone else: thanks to everyone who made the effort (and investment) to put up the lights. Looked great!
As to future lights: We thought this year’s tree looked good, happy with the size.
On lights, if more are added (which would be nice), we prefer all white lights. The multi-coloured lights remind us more of a warm summer’s evening …

  14. Well done everyone who contributed to making the village green so festive. The lights reflecting in the pond were enchanting and captured the magic of Christmas, particularly for the little ones. We wandered down on Christmas Eve hoping to catch a community event (carols round the tree maybe) – that would have been perfect. The tree looked good and was a good size. Thanks for everyone’s efforts.

  15. I thought it looked very good this Christmas. The tree was a better size but it would be nice if it could be perhaps slightly bigger! Not so keen on the new block of lights that were near the road to the school – seemed out of place somehow – but really like the coloured ones that reflect on the water and if possible it would be great to have more of these around The Green. Maybe events other than the Carols on The Green could be considered but I think so many of us are involved in preparations for other organisations in the lead-up to Christmas (not to mention our own!), I wonder if events would be well supported but it might be worth a try. I do appreciate the effort made to make The Green look so festive and would like to thank those involved who give up their time to do this for the benefit of our community.
