Why have this event? – Sustainability, in its simplest form, is about the interconnections of the environment, society and the economy. To date, our unsustainable development has resulted in changes to our climate, a stress on resources and environmental systems and an increasing loss of biodiversity both locally and around the world. It is only by comprehensive efforts from individuals, businesses and governments, that solutions can be found. In a nutshell:
We are all responsible for the impact we have on the planet.
As part of that responsibility, Histon and Impington Parish Council will sponsor a village Sustainability Event.
Details of the event – The event will be held on Saturday 5th April from 10am until 3pm, at the Community Hall, Recreation Centre. Residents will be able to talk to experts and get advice on saving money and helping the Environment.
Our village event will feature four main areas related to sustainability:
- Transportation
- Food sustainability
- Energy reduction
- Recycling
There will be information on; car sharing initiatives, Emmaus (a local charity who will recycle your unwanted furniture, electrical goods and clothes), allotments and gardening in the village, the village orchard project (HICOP), energy reduction advice from Climate Energy Limited and representatives from the Parish Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council and the Guided Bus to answer your questions on local sustainability issues.
Potential benefits – As mentioned in the introduction, through becoming a more sustainable community, our impact on the environment will be reduced. This can also benefit individuals by reducing the costs associated with their use of resources such as energy. A recent government report (Community Energy Strategy: People Powering Change) gave an example where energy assessments undertaken on 119 Oxford households recommended 579 energy efficiency measures with a potential savings of £450 per household.
