Rain, flooding update

Histon & Impington had 64mm of rain in 12 hours – most of it (44mm) by 6:30 on Friday evening, but a further 20mm overnight. That’s a month’s worth of rain – and it’s not surprising that we’ve seen some flooding as a result.

Some homes were flooded – and there have been problems elsewhere.

Even with overnight rain, The Brook dropped overnight, and almost all of the roads cleared. There’s been standing water on the B1049 (Glebe Way, by Orchard Road) and as a result the road has been closed. County Council Highways staff have called out the services of a specialist drainage company, who have been emptying the drains – and then emptying their tanker (photo) – and this should allow for the road to be opened.

There’s more rain forecast. It’s not at all clear how much – but none of the numbers are as high as we’ve just had – and some of them are just a few mm.

But, we may still have some flooding. So:

  • if you do need sandbags, South Cambridgeshire District Council are the people to contact – but they’re pretty busy at the moment, other communities have been hit worse than we have
  • if you have to drive through floods – keep your speed down – the flooding of some homes yesterday was made worse by cars travelling at speed throwing up waves. The RAC has good advice about driving in these conditions
  • if you can, look out for your neighbours – some of them can’t flush their toilets, and elderly residents may need help
  • if you’re on Facebook, HI People is a great way to keep in touch, keep people up to date and find help if you need it
  • if you’ve got any pictures, or if your home has been affected, please let the Parish Council know so that we can take it up with those already looking at the Histon and Impington “wetspot”
