New bus shelter for the Coppice

The County Council announced in January that it had secured £1.7 million of funding from the Department for Transport’s Better Bus Area Fund (BBAF). Most of this money went on major schemes in Cambridge but it did make available an amount for which parishes could bid. Histon & Impington Parish Council did just that and was successful and funding has been approved for a bus shelter at the Coppice (Cambridge bound).

This bus stop is a difficult one because the pavement level is low and access to the bus is from a grass verge. It is therefore also intended to improve the stop itself and funding for this is available from the Northern Area Corridor section 106 fund from which the parish council has been granted funding.

  1. Will this work also repair the sunken area of carriageway at the bus stop which has probably been caused by the nearside front wheel of buses stopping at this stop? This is quite a deep hole and represents a serious hazard to cyclists.

  2. This of course has now been done. But it has actually made a problem worse. It has always been difficult to get on to a bus from this stop as the road is much higher than the pavement, though bus drivers do helpfully lower the bus. For those of us with mobility problems it is now even more difficult to get on to a bus as the new surface is even lower. This is very disappointing. Could we have a site visit and I will demonstrate!
