Information from South Cambridgeshire District Council:
As you may have heard, trades unions have called a one-day strike for Tuesday 28 March over proposals by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister to make changes to the Local Government Pension Scheme.
At this stage, it is difficult to tell how SCDC services will be affected next Tuesday. If experience of previous local government strikes is anything to go by, it is worth noting that - on those occasions - most SCDC services have continued to operate almost as normal, albeit that some union members have chosen to mark the day of action by working 'core hours' only. (Core working hours at SCDC are 10.00 am until 12 noon and 2.00pm to 4.00pm.)
At SCDC, we are making arrangements to try to minimise disruption to our services for customers and maintain health and safety, whilst respecting the right of employees to take strike action. Priority will be given to dealing with urgent service requests (eg, emergency housing repairs and high risks of homelessness). We would advise residents whose request for a service or information is not urgent to think about contacting the Council on another day next week, instead of Tuesday 28th.
One service which may be affected by the strike action more than most is refuse collections that are scheduled for Tuesday. We will try to carry out as many collections as possible. If we find, on the day, that we do not have enough crews to carry out all due collections in particular parts of the district, we will notify relevant local councillors and parish clerks, as well as informing residents via the media and our website. Any refuse collections not made on Tuesday 28th will be carried out on the following Saturday (1st April). Refuse collections that normally take place on Wednesdays should not be affected by the strike action on Tuesday 28th.
