A14 exhibitions on hold

Written 08/04/05

The Highways Agency issued the following statement on 6 April:

"In accordance with the Guidance on Communications during a General Election campaign issued by the Cabinet Office, the Highways Agency has postponed the exhibitions being held in connection with the public consultation for A14 widening between Ellington and Fen Ditton.

We have been advised that it would be inappropriate to hold a public exhibition during an election campaign. However, the public consultation process is continuing as planned.

The remaining exhibitions will be held as soon as possible after the general election, and the public will still be given the full opportunity to view and comment on the scheme. The consultation period extends to 30 June so there remains ample time for people to visit exhibitions and express their views."

Local politicians have launched a scathing attack on the decision, reported in the Cambridge Evening News. Their leader was similarly critical, and an online poll is currently showing over 80% of people critical of the decision to delay them.
