Gateways mark the entrances of towns and villages. They remind drivers that they are entering a residential area and therefore a change in speed limit. They are individually designed, but usually include verge structures, such as fencing, gates or posts, a village name plate and red surfacing.
Benefits
Show drivers that the nature of the road has changed
Highlight speed limit changes
Disadvantages
Effectiveness may reduce after a period of time
Other measures are needed to maintain speed reduction through the village or town
