CHALLENGE 2000

CALLING OUR YOUNG PEOPLE

Our plans for the Year 2000 are not about getting drunk or having an extra special 'knees-up' on the 31 December. We are using the high profile of the Year 2000 as an excuse to start something new, something that will be with us long after the festivities are over. The Millennium Committee is here to help those who would like to contribute to a greater sense of community, by discussing projects and giving advice about organisation and funding. As you can see from our Calendar for the Year 2000 on the centre pages, many of our original ideas have been picked up. But we are lacking the involvement of the young people who live in the two villages and of those who come here from outside the village boundaries for their education.

We call on all those under the age of 18 to rise to the Challenge 2000.

Surely there must be some amongst you who would like to take part in one way or another, or organise a day, or even a weekend entirely dedicated to what matters to young people. Our suggestions - and they are only suggestions - would run along the lines of exhibitions of arts and crafts, presentations of poetry or prose (either written or spoken), street theatre, plays, dance, music of all types for different age groups and, to crown it all, a big 'Gig'. There is a great deal of talent out there and we would be happy to offer a platform. Such an event might even be turned into an annual 'happening'. You may, of course, have other ideas of how best to make an impact on the community.

Perhaps you would like to organise a group to help the infirm - young and old - with some of the things they find difficult to cope with, or visit people who are lonely and need someone to talk to. Perhaps you have some ideas how we could brighten up (and tidy up!) our surroundings. Many of these things need special permission or adult supervision. We would be able to put you in touch with the people who are ultimately responsible for health, safety and the administration of rules and regulations. But do not let this put you off. If you do not try, you will never know what you can achieve. Pick up the Challenge 2000 and come forward with exciting ideas!

If you would like to be involved, please contact:

Mrs. Pat Bennett, 1 Park Avenue, Histon, CB4 9JU. Tel.: 01223 234134.

She will be able to arrange a meeting to discuss your plans. Or put your plans in writing and send them to us at the above address. We will get back to you promptly.

Let's hear from you!
